August 7, 2003 - "Predator diversity hotspots in the blue ocean" by Boris Worm, Heike K. Lotze, Ransom A. Myers. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA Vol. 100: pp. 9884-9888. - http://www.pnas.org/cgi/doi/10.1073/pnas.1333941100

Researchers used detailed scientific observer records from longline fisheries from the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean to document that oceanic predators, such as tuna, sharks, billfish, and sea turtles that are vulnerable to overfishing, concentrate in hotspots. Through modeling, the researchers predicted that protecting these hotspot areas from fishing would yield greater benefits for threatened species than closing any other area.

News Release from Institut fur Meereskunde an der Universitat Kiel on research published in the August Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences U.S.A regarding the discovery that large oceanic predators concentrate in unique diversity hotspots much like those that exist on land and suggest these hotspots are ideal candidates for marine reserves.
